First Off Announcements and the like. Ashley: Welcome to The Beat! It's a busy day over here (I'm here trying to report the news and pack for an upcoming move in my spare moments), so we'll get right to the highlights of the day. The Big One Breaking down the day's biggest Inno story. Equity in tech Another organization is landing in Miami to ensure the region's tech boom benefits women and other underrepresented people in the sector.
Gender Equality in Tech (GET) Cities in launching its third hub in Miami, where it will collaborate with local stakeholders to bring more women, trans, nonbinary, indigenous and people of color into technology careers and leadership roles.
The initiative is led by the SecondMuse Foundation and Break Through Tech in partnership with Pivotal Ventures, an investment and incubation company created by Melinda French Gates.
GET Cities, which launched in 2020, already has programs in Chicago and Washington, D.C. National Director Leslie Lynn Smith said adding Miami as the initiative's third city will help the group develop a collective body of insight and best practices that can be applied to other large metro areas. GET Cities plans to announce its Miami program director and host a launch event in early 2022. [Read more here] Making Moves Inside the people, companies and organizations making moves around Miami. Leading the way One of the country's top-funded companies led by Hispanic founders is located right here in South Florida.
According to Crunchbase, Miami-based Papa was among 30 companies founded by diverse entrepreneurs that raised the most funding in 2021, with more than $210 million secured from investors.
The Crunchbase list is based on funding rounds announced by companies between Jan. 1 and Nov. 30, and includes seed, venture, corporate venture and private equity investments. The data focuses on U.S.-based businesses founded by Black/African American and Hispanic/Latinx founders. [Read more here]
Introducing The Startup Studio Emerge Americas is partnering with City National Bank of Florida to launch The Startup Studio, a program to direct more funding to minority startup founders. Twenty early-stage startups based in Florida will be selected to participate in a five-week education program, with the chance to win a $25,000 grant funded by CNB. Apply here by Jan. 7.
New addition to Reef C-Suite Dylan Casey joined Reef Technology as chief product officer, a newly created role where he will help the Miami company build software and other products that will enable it to scale more efficiently. Casey was previously chief product officer for Goldman Sachs' engineering division, where he was responsible for building and leading product management teams.
